GINGKO PROTOCOL
1. Go to your health-food store and buy GINGKO BILOBA with 6% Terpenoids in blend on the label (Jarrow (Brand name) makes a good blend). Dosage 60-120 mgs powdered capsules or tablets.
2. Now you want to taper up to 60mgs 2 times a day > So that will be 120mgs total per day. You can divide this up any way you want. Some volunteers had sleep issues if they took the gingko late in the evening so try and keep your final dose for the day between 1-4:00pm
The reason It is recommended to take at least 2 doses per day, is that a single dose in the morning will cause insomnia around 1AM the following morning.
this is because the bilobalites that control glutamate ware off faster and glutamate can climb to uncomfortable levels while the gaba blocking ginkgolites are still working. 2 or more doses a day will prevent this.
3. After the taper keep taking 60mgs once in the morning and once in the afternoon for 3-6 weeks and then taper off (doing the above taper backwards). Stay off for 10-14 days and taper back on if needed.
The taper is used because the poor souls that worked with this at the beginning all experienced increased symptoms for 3-7 days both when they started and when they stopped. The taper pretty much eliminated this HOWEVER, you may still experience an increase in symptoms. Don?t let this worry you, it is a sign that the gingko most likely is working...
NOTE:
120mgs was our original estimated total daily dosage we though was appropriate. However it has been noted that a lower dose works just as well. So if your symptoms decline at a lower dose (this will probably be evident during the taper) there is no need to go up to 120mgs.
In some countries such as Australia, the only Ginkgo available is the whole dried leaf variety.
The following has been used with good success.
Bioglan 2000mg Equiv of dried leaf extract:
Ingredients per tablet -
Ginkgo biloba (Ginkgo) extract equiv. to dry leaf 2000mg
std. to contain Ginkgo flavonglycosides 9.6mg
and Ginkgolides and bilobalide 2.4mg
The mg rating of these tablets is 50 times that of the recommended Jarrow variety, so a single tablet of 2000mg = 40mg of the Jarrow concentrate.
What did we learn??!!
1. Gingko seems to decrease the intensity of benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms and also seems to help with overall healing from benzodiazepine dependence.
2. Each individual is different in terms of the dose that will work. Some have success at the original dosage and others find that they have good results at a lower dose.
3. On a symptom intensity range of 1-10 (10 being the highest) gingko seems to be able to bring those that have symptom ranges in the 7-8 area range down to a 1-3 range. And those at 1-5 range down to almost 0 (zero).
4. Gingko seems to work BEST at the end of the benzo taper or when the taper is complete. However many volunteers have used gingko in the middle of the taper with positive results.
5. At the beginning your gaba is being forced down so you will may be more edgy than normal. Fortunately the bad anxiety seems to fade out after the first few days as the glutamate gets blocked as well. The reason we believe that coming off ginkgo should be tapered is because the ?glutamate block? is shorter lived than the ?gaba block?. CT can cause a wave to occur because you get an increase of glutamate while your gaba is still low. Tapering will maintain the right balance and seems to avoid this completely. Definitely stay on ginkgo for 2 to 6 weeks to get the up regulation benefits.
Ginkgo Taper guide:
This is a very rough guide to your taper on and off ginkgo. If you notice no effects over a 2 day period, you could speed this up, Alternatively slow down if you feel increased symptoms.
Day 1-2: 1/4 capsule morning, and 1/4 capsule evenning (15 + 15 = 30 mg.)
Day 3-4: 1/2 capsule morning, and 1/2 capsule evenning (30 + 30 = 60 mg.)
Day 5-6: 3/4 capsule morning, and 3/4 capsule evenning (45 + 45 = 90 mg.)
Day 7 onwards: 1 capsule morning, 1 evenning until you decide things are no longer changing ( 3 to 6 weeks).
Do this in reverse to taper off again.
